SUSTAINABLE
WORLD
Urbanization
Within the next few years, for the first time
in history, more than half of the world's population will be living
in urban centres. This concentration of people in towns and cities,
known as urbanization, has far-reaching effects, not only in the
urban areas themselves, but in surrounding rural areas as well.
If not managed carefully, the process of urbanization can result
in pollution, overcrowding, congestion, large amounts of waste,
and can destroy or change environments forever.
If we and the Earth are to survive, we have to develop urban areas
that minimise their impact on others, and the environment. We need
to meet the needs of people today, while looking after resources
for people in the future. This is called sustainable development
– and this book explains how urban centres will have to change
and evolve. It also suggests some choices you can make to ensure
a more sustainable future – whether you live
in a city, town, or rural area.
